Recently, we sat down with food photographer & clickbooq user Ryan Notch to get a bit more acquainted.

1. What are your three must-have accessories / tools on a shoot?

A Sekonic L558R light meter, an X-Rite ColorChecker card, and half a dozen packs of Fuji FP-100C45 instant film sheets. I find that a few minutes of preparation before the shoot saves a few hours on the computer afterward.

2. What is your favorite website / blog?

There has been such an explosion of great sites and blogs for photographers in the last few years that asking me to pick just one is a bit like Sophie’s Choice, however for inspiration and work from new artists I regularly visit sites like photo.net, jpgmag.com, and lightleaks.org. In the blog world I am an avid follower of strobist.com, stuckincustoms.com, and aphotoeditor.com.

3. Once piece of advice you’d give to all food photographers?

Align yourself and work often with a talented food stylist. Their genius will make your work look amazing!

4. You’re stranded on an island: whats the one camera you have with you?

I am assuming that I would have quite a bit of free time on said island so I would choose my Sinar F2 4×5 large-format camera. Its slow and methodical process is perfect for the isolation and self-exploration involved in the lengthy period of time that I would be waiting for a passing ship.

5. Who or what serves as your greatest source of inspiration for photography?

While it may sound relatively trite, I am continually blown away by the work of Ansel Adams, his contribution to the art form and his methodical development of the zone system. The master said it best: “When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs. When images become inadequate, I shall be content with silence.” — Ansel Adams
